The T'ai Chi Ch'uan Center of Milwaukee was started in 1974. The center is a non-profit educational center for the study of T'ai Chi Ch'uan and related Chinese martial arts. The T'ai Chi Ch'uan solo exercise is taught in consecutive week
ly classes, taking six months to complete the basic form class.
After this, continuing classes for refinement of the form and
beginning push-hands practice are available. Advanced students
will have the opportunity to learn the T'ai Chi sword form and
other systems such as Ba Gua, Chin Na, and Staff in special
classes.
The Director of the Center, Michael Milewski, has studied T'ai Chi and other martial arts with masters from China, Taiwan and the U.S. He has been teaching in Milwaukee and surrounding areas for 30 years.
T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a traditional Chinese exercise practiced for health, relaxation, meditation and self-defense. The exercise is performed slowly and continuously, taking about ten minutes to complete one "round" or "set". It requires no special equipment and can be done in a small space. Although ancient in origin, T'ai Chi is valuable and widely practiced in the modern world to help cope with the stresses of daily life. It is very popular in China and other parts of the Orient where thousands of people, young and old alike, get together in the mornings to do the exercise before beginning their daily activities. The value of T'ai Chi as a health exercise and self-defense system lies in its emphasis on total body integration and developing "internal" strength, relaxation and coordination. It is a gentle exercise, which is suitable for people in a wide variety of physical conditions. The movements are adjustable to fit the health and strength levels of each individual.
